China bypassed Greece

For the first time, China became the largest shipowner by gross tonnage, ahead of Greece.

According to the Clarksons rating, the total gross capacity of vessels owned by China is 249.2 million registered tons (180 billion dollars in value terms ), Greece – 249 million registered tons. Japan is in third place with 181 million registered tons. It is followed by South Korea and the United States, which have 66 million registered tons each. Germany, which was ranked fourth in this ranking 10 years ago, is now only on the seventh line.

In the early 2000s, China's merchant fleet made up about one twentieth of the entire world fleet, and now, 20 years later, it is already the seventh part of it. Over the past 10 years, the capacity of China's merchant fleet has more than doubled.
