Russian airlines that operate international flights and foreign airlines flying to Russia may face problems in organizing flights in the fall of 2023 due to the expected disconnection of Russia from the "aviation SWIFT" - the information transmission system between air carriers and airports.
The communication system is provided by the Swiss company Societe Internationale de Telecommunication Aeronautiques (SITA), which promised to disconnect Russia at the end of September. Russian airlines will not be able to transfer data on flights, passengers and luggage to the information systems of international airports via SITA, and foreign carriers will not be able to exchange data with Russian airports.
Alternative communication channels are needed for international transportation – for most of the countries to which flights from Russia are carried out, this issue has been resolved, negotiations are continuing with the rest, the press service of the Ministry of Transport said. Most SITA services in Russia were disabled during 2022, the representative of the ministry added. It is still unclear through which channels information will be exchanged with airports in China.
Representatives of Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Pulkovo, Kazan Airport and Airports of Regions Holding (airports in Yekaterinburg, Samara and a number of other cities ) claim that their IT infrastructure is ready to work with any airlines, including foreign ones, and that they organize their own direct communication channels with them. Disconnecting from SITA will not have a significant impact on the passenger traffic of Russian airlines: its main share consists of its own sales channels in the domestic system of registration of air transportation, the press service of Aeroflot noted.
